CARL HESTER MBE

Carl Hester MBE is one of Britain’s most distinguished dressage riders, celebrated for his longevity, innovation, and influence both within and beyond equestrian sport.

Raised from the age of four on the car-free Channel Island of Sark, he learned to ride and work with horses from an early age.  After leaving Sark, he began his professional career at the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy in Hampshire, where he competed and developed his foundational horsemanship.

He rose in the dressage world through a turning point working under Dr Wilfried Bechtolsheimer, joining his team and riding for him in major international events including the World and European Championships.  In 1992, he became the youngest British rider ever to compete in the Olympic Games, riding Georgione at Barcelona.

Over his career, Hester has been central to Great Britain’s successes in dressage. He was part of the British team that won gold at the 2012 London Olympics and has since added silver and bronze team medals in subsequent Games.  At European and World levels, he has earned multiple team and individual medals, and continues to be a leading figure in championship competition.

Beyond competition, Hester is known for mentoring younger talents, including Charlotte Dujardin, and for his philosophical approach to training — emphasizing balance, psychological strength, and respect between rider and horse.

In recent years, Hester’s influence has expanded further: a biopic titled Stride has been announced to depict his journey from Sark to Olympic gold.  He remains a visible voice in the equestrian community, blending performance, education, and advocacy in the sport.
